Giardia Symptoms and Food Poisoning
Giardia
can sometimes be confused with food poisoning. But
I think it unlikely that you'll mistake one for the
other once you know the symptoms. Food poisoning is
much more severe, and potentially dangerous.
In my one encounter with severe food poisoning, I
had the classical symptoms. I was blasting everything
out of my system from both ends. Throwing up or vomiting
violently. And shooting diarrhetic streams out the
other end.
And you feel really nauseous when you have food poisoning,
compared to feeling only kind of nauseous when you
have giardia.
If you have food poisoning you'll want to consider
going to a doctor, especially if you have any other
health problems or are elderly. As always, our recommendation
is always to see a medical doctor.
Giardia
and Lactose Intolerance
With
giardia infection, some people appear to develop lactose
intolerance. That is, their digestive system become
less able to digest milk.
There is stomach grumbling and flatulence. This relationship
between giardia and lactose intolerance hasn't been
proven, it's just what some people's opinions are.
I tend to think it is likely correct. But I also think
that given time, as the digestive system settles back
down to more of a normal situation over a few months,
almost everyone who has had some lactose intolerance
as a result of giardia can drink milk again.
Even when someone gets some gas from drinking milk,
usually just cutting down the amount of milk drinking
helps a lot. Seldom does milk need to be completely
eliminated.
